The Federal Government to the Rescue

It has happened to just about everyone. You have an ongoing service or membership where you’re charged often and you try to cancel it, but it’s next to impossible to cancel!

It’s maddening! It’s so easy to sign up for that $8 a month charge to watch something we really want to see, but then once you’re not watching whatever it is anymore, you cant find a way to cancel it! Even if you can find a phone number, you don’t actually talk to a real human.

The Federal Government is swooping into save us! The FTC has proposed a “Click to Cancel” provision requiring these places to make it as easy to cancel as it was to sign up.

They said “Some businesses too often trick consumers into paying for subscriptions they no longer want or didn’t want or didn’t sign up for in the first place. The proposed rule would require that companies make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up for one. The proposal would save consumers time and money and business that continued to use subscription tricks and traps would be subject to stiff penalties.”
